1. Location

Sheraton Maui Resort has definitely got the best part of Kaanapali Beach. It is build into the side of a cliff on the curving white-sand cove next to the famous Black Rock (Pu’u Keka’a), one of Maui’s best snorkeling spots. This 80-foot lava rock foundation that is featured in many Hawaiian legends is right in front of Sheraton Maui. Black Rock is a magic place, “hill creating strength through enlightment”.

The grounds at Sheraton Maui are enormous, encompassing 23 oceanfront acres. When you first enter the lobby, a panorama of natural wonders unwraps before your eyes: the cobalt blue Pacific, the golden sands of Kaanapali, coconut palms, neighboring islands in the distance, and a 142-yard fantastic oceanfront swimming lagoon surrounded by lush tropical landscaping. There are koi (carp) you can feed with fish food provided by the Sheraton – kids will love it.

2. Rooms

After $160 million renovation, this hotel is more amazing than ever. It is one of best-known “fantasy hotels” in Hawaii.

Every detail has been thought of. Even when you check in, you will love their “no-hassle” procedure – the valet takes you and your luggage straight to your room, no time wasted standing in line at registration!

The rooms are spread among 6 buildings, each no taller than 6 stories. Your room will be decorated with tropical furnishings (bamboo and rattan), custom bedspread, Hawaiian artwork, and amenities galore, right down to toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Private balcony (lanai) is wonderful for sitting out and watching the waves, resort’s tropical gardens or West Maui mountains.

Are you looking for a really amazing view? Deluxe ocean front rooms (view rates) in the newer wings (Hale Moana and Hale Hoku) offer some of Maui’s best panoramic views of the Pacific. Those rooms also have microwave oven in addition to regular amenities.

There are 464 rooms and 46 suites. Each room features:
  • Beds: 1 king or 2 doubles
  • Air-conditioning
  • Private lanai
  • Color cable TV
  • Sony Play Station
  • Mini-refrigerator
  • Microwaves in deluxe ocean front rooms only
  • Coffee maker with free Kona coffee supply
  • Hair dryer
  • Yukata bathrobes
  • Iron and board
  • In-room digital safe
  • Room service

Ohana Suite
Ideal for families, this 665-sq-ft suite features wet bar and microwave, 2 double beds, deluxe pull-down daybed, and spacious bathroom with double sink, separate shower and tub, and brand-name bath amenities.

3. Things to do

  • Nightly Cliff Diving Ceremony
Every evening, as the sun goes down, a small crowd gathers in front of the hotel to watch the traditional ceremony. You will hear a concho shell announcing the arrival of a young cliff diver who runs to the Black Rock leaving a trail of glowing torches behind him. He casts a flower lei into the sea and takes a breathtaking dive from the Black Rock into the rolling surf below. A beautiful tropical night has just started!

  • Two Huge Swimming Pools
Sheraton Maui Resort has a 142-yard natural swimming lagoon. Enganced by lava rock waterways, wooden bridges, lush tropical foliage, and gentle-swaying palms, this is much more than just a pool.

Couples may tuck away in a secluded corner where the whirlpool is, or splurge for a poolside massage session.

There are also 2 pool bars that serve tropical refreshments and hot grilled snacks all day.

Children will enjoy hours of fun in their own wading pool that is just one foot deep and safe even for the little ones.

  • Beach Activities
As we already mentioned, Sheraton Maui Resort is known as Maui’s snorkeling mecca. The ocean around Black Rock is only 20-30 foot deep and full of fluorescent fish, sea turtles, rays and eels. And all od this is right outside your door! From any part of the beach, you will also get unbelievable views of neighbor islands Molokai and Lanai. Beach activities desk can help you arrange anything from parasailing and catamaran rides to scuba diving. Complimentary beach towels are provided, equipment rentals are available.

  • Children's Program (for ages 5-12)
Keiki Aloha Program combines Hawaiian history and culture with arts, crafts and games that children love. They will be building sand castles, twisting Ti Leaf bracelets, stringing flower leis, mixing tropical smoothies and dancing hula.

This program runs daily at sister property, Westin Maui, from 9am to 3pm (lunch is included in the price). Full day program rate is about $50.00 (in 2004) for the first child and $30.00 for each sibling. There are also evening programs available so the parents can enjoy a nice dinner out on their own.

  • Two 18-hole Golf Courses
Kaanapali’s North and South courses offer some of the most unique challenges in Kaanapali: distracting beauty with sweeping views of the ocean, gentle trade winds to tease your drives, even a turn-of-the-century sugarcane train chugging by.

Royal North Course (6,994 yards, 18 holes) was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and has long been considered one of Maui’s best. The 18th hole, considered one of the toughest holes in the islands, requires a golfer to hit a shot over water.

Royal South Course (6,555 yards, 18 holes) was named one of North America’s top “Women Friendly” courses by Golf for Women magazine. It is ideal for players of all levels.

Each year, Kaanapali takes center stage in the world of golf with the Kaanapali Classic, a fitting conclusion to the Senior PGA Tour. It attracts such names as Chi Chi Rodriguez, Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer, Tom Weiskoff, Dave Stockton and Hale Irwin.

Westin Maui guests receive preferred rates and tee times at both courses. Talk to the activity desk to make the arrangements.

  • Seaside Salon and Day Spa
Pamper yourself with an array of treatments like body scrub, facial, make-up, hair and nail care, or seaside massage. They will set a table outside so the sound of the waves can hypnotize you as you gaze out at the Pacific. Choose from Lomi Lomi massage that utilizes the forearm with long strokes, Swedish massage, Shiatsu or accupressure technique.

If you enjoy thalassotherapy, indulge in Sheraton Maui's own "Maui Glow", an exfoliating treatment, or the "Hawaiian Style" that stimulates and refreshes the body with Hawaiian sea salt and mud masque. "Hawaiian Sun Goddess" drenches your thirsty skin with papaya, avocado and aloe vera mask.

The most special treatment is the Seaside Bridal Package that includes massage, exfolating, moisturizing and a mineral rich footbath for two.

  • Shopping
For shopping, head to the Whalers Village, Maui Shopping Center, or Lahaina town, all just a short drive away. There are also several specialty shops at the hotel that offer a good variety of souvenirs, clothes, jewelry and sundry items.

    Other facilities include:
  • Fresh flower lei greeting when you arrive
  • Fitness center
  • Tennis courts (night-lit)
  • Full-service business center
  • Concierge
  • Beauty salon and day spa
  • Laundromat
  • Same-day dry cleaning and laundry valet service (fee)
  • Game room
  • Activity desk

4. Restaurants

   1) Keka'a Terrace

Stroll across a wooden bridge and over a fresh water Koi pond to discover the casual comfort of Keka’a Terrace. Gentle trades whisper through the open-air dining room all day long where you can enjoy breakfast and dinner daily.

Want to try something special? How about Chef’s Catch of the Day prepared Ala Oscar: Sautéed and topped with Alakan King Crab legs, fresh Ma’alaea Asparagus and finished with a Bearnaise Sauce? They also offer regular themed dinner buffets.

You can sit indoors or outside, and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Black Rock in the distance.

   2) Teppan-Yaki Dan

Have your dinner grilled right in front of you by an artistic chef! Food can be described as contemporary Japanese, very flavorful, fresh and exotic.

   3) Dinner Under Stars

Have you always wanted to have an exclusive dinner prepared just for the two of you? You choose one of 3 pre-set menus and location – in the middle of a lush tropical garden, next to a cascading waterfall, or in the privacy of a beachfront dinner bungalow. A private butler will serve your dinner that will include 4 or 5 courses such as filet mignon, fresh island fish, and sumptuous island dessert.

   4) Lagoon Bar and Lounge

Wander through the gardens and cross a wooden bridge to find the Lagoon Bar nestled on a cozy island amidst a lava-rock lagoon. Enjoy a refreshing tropical treat or hot barbecule lunch as you bask in the Hawaiian sun. In the evening, they have live Hawaiian and contemporary music. This is also a great place to watch the traditional cliff diving and torch lighting ceremony at sunset.
