1. Location ResortQuest Waimea Plantation Cottages (former Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages) is the only place to stay on Kauai's West Side, known for its sunny weather. This property is located just 1/8 mile below Waimea Town, at the foot of the famous Waimea Canyon. 48 restored sugar-plantation cottages, dating from the 1880s to the 1930s sit among a coco palm grove. It is a wonderful private retreat with gorgeous grounds that look like a botanical garden - 27 acres of ironwood and banyan trees, fragrant plumeria, papaya, apple bananas, fig and tangerine trees (to name only a few), and big lawns filled with colorful flowers. Just imagine - you can step outside your cottage and pick a ripe mango, banana, avocado or coconut for a snack! The overall experience is intoxicating, especially the full moon rising above the 100-year-old palms. The seclusion of this village make it a nice place for kids to wander and explore, away from traffic. Couples will love relaxing in the hammocks under the trees. If you are looking for grocery store, shops and restaurants, you can always walk to Waimea town. That place is filled with historical places dating from before the Polynesian migration to the islands. You will find that West Kauai reflects its culture and heritage not only on special occasions, but in everyday life. Another attraction nearby is Waimea Landing, otherwise referred to as Waimea Pier. It played a major historical role in West Kauai's success as a center of commerce in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today it is a popular fishing and socializing spot for the locals. You will be about 1 1/2 hrs away from the North Shore, 20 minutes from Poipu. Lihue Airport is 45 min drive away.
2. Rooms Each cottage at ResortQuest Waimea Plantation Cottages has been transformed into cozy, comfortable guest unit with period rattan, mahogany and wicker furniture and fabrics from the 1930s. Wooden floors, ceiling fans and claw-foot bathtubs are mixed with amenities such as modern kitchens and cable TVs. This is like staying over at an old friend's house. No two cottages are the same! Imagine mango trees with fresh ripe mangoes and fragrant plumeria trees growing in front of your porch. If you get an oceanfront cottage, you can just sit on the porch and enjoy the ocean breeze, and at night fall asleep to the sound of the surf. The only negative thing we can say about these cottages... you may hear some roosters every once in a while, but that's just part of island living.
3. Restaurants 1) Waimea Brewing Company This onsite brewpub, serves lunch and dinner and features live music on weeekends. Entrees range from fresh catch of the day to burgers and steaks, and there are also appetizers and desserts. Handcrafted beers are brewed right there in copper clad and stainless steel tanks that you can see behind the concrete bar tinted with West Kauai's famous red-colored dirt and authentic petroglyphs.
