1. Location This shocking-pink oasis is hidden away among blooming gardens between Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center and Waikiki Beach. As soon as you step under the porte cochére and receive a traditional flower lei welcome from a Hawaiian woman, you will like you are in a very private and secluded resort. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel was once the playground of Hollywood celebs like Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. The book The Pink Palace describes that era of opulence, the "roaring twenties," when guests arrived in chauffeur driven Rolls Royces, with servants unloading their steamer trunks. Those fortunate travelers usually stayed for a month or more, unwinding after the long voyage by ship. Today, the hotel still carries the atmosphere of old movies and romantic ballads, black-tie dinners and Champagne toasts.
2. Rooms The hotel's 527 rooms are split between 2 wings: Historic Wing (originally built in 1927) and Royal Tower (added in 1969). Historic Wing is great if you want to experience the chic charm of the '20s. Rooms in the Historic Wing have soft pastel floral walls, plush carpets, and custom made furniture like canopied or four-poster beds, and Queen Anne-style writing desks and dressers. If you want more space, you can book Large Luxury Garden View or Large Luxury Ocean View room which will have a separate sitting area. Historic Wing rooms have no lanai. Royal Tower is more modern and comfortable. Each room has a private lanai with wonderful views of the Pacific and the tropical sunsets. Whether you are staying in a garden or ocean view room, the service is impeccable in every way... isn't is nice to have a chocolate on your pillow and turn-down every evening?
3. Restaurants 1) Monarch Room - Your table will have a view of Diamond Head silhouette above the ocean, and the star-filled sky. Afterwards, there's a hard to resis the temptation to take a moonlit walk along the white sands of Waikiki Beach, warm surf licking at your ankles. 2) The Surf Room - A popular meeting place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Special seafood buffet on Friday and sumptuous brunch on Sunday. 3) Mai Tai Bar - One of the most "happening" places in Waikiki. Mai Tais supposedly originated here! Imagine drinking a perfect Mai Tai while looking at the beautiful Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head... that moment is alone is worth the trip! 4) Royal Hawaiian Beach Club - Relax by the beach for breakfast, light lunch or afternoon snacks. The Beach Club Cafe is located by the pool and serves soft drinks and cocktails. 5) Afternoon Tea - Enjoy a relaxed afternoon of tea and beautiful views of the Coconut Grove. Royal Tea is a 75-year old tradition at the Royal Hawaiian. Just like years ago, a kimono-clad server will present you with a delectable selection of signature tea blends, finger sandwiches, scones, pastries, and cookies. You can also enjoy live classic and etnic music by "Bamboo and Rosewood", a popular guitar-and-flute duo. Served 1-4pm. 6) The Royal Hawaiian Luau - Your evening begins with a traditional lei greetings, sound of Hawaiian melodies and refreshing Mai Tais on the Ocean Lawn. As the sun goes down, you are invited to taste food from the Islands, including specialties like Teriyaki Beef and Island Style fish, salads and desserts. Then you will be shown the spectacular Royal Polynesian Extravaganza, with pulsating authentic songs and dances. The luau is offered every Monday.
