1. Location and history Sheraton Moana Surfrider is located in the middle of Waikiki, within walking distance to everything, including shops, restaurants and nightclubs. It is set on a fantastic stretch of beach. When you walk into the open-air lobby, you will be greeted with fresh, fragrant flower leis presented to you by the staff. There are no walls separating the lobby from the pool, the beach and the ocean. The first thing you will notice in the courtyard is a huge Banyan Tree that was planted back in 1904. It is a lovely place to have lunch or cocktails while watching the sunset. In 1901, Sheraton Moana Surfrider opened its doos as the first hotel on Waikiki Beach. The hotel's innovative amenities such as private bathroom and telephone in each room (an unheard-of-luxury at the turn of 20th century) quickly became the talk of the travel world. A few years later, Moana Surfrider appeared in the spotlight again. It became home to the "Hawaii Calls," a classic radio program of the '50s which beamed Hawaiian music from the historic Banyan Veranda to the world. In 1987, the sadly neglected Moana was acquired by a Japanese company, which made a megamillion-dollar commitment not just to restore the hotel, but to bring it back to its turn-of-the-century glory. The renovation was remarkable, thanks to an abundance of old photographs and plans that allowed the builders to restore the hotel to perfection. Now Sheraton Moana Surfrider is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. If you want to get away from the noise of modern life and step back into Victorian era elegance and simplicity, this is the place to do it. The architecture of this hotel is really beautiful. Passerbys across the street are constantly stopping to take photographs. You can't help but feel like you are in a movie from the golden age while walking around the hotel.
2. Rooms Banyan Wing rooms have a lot of character! Each floor is done in a different kind of wood - mahogany, maple, oak, cherry and koa. These rooms are small by today's standards, but very well-appointed and charming. Many things have been modernized, but the feeling of Hawaiian Victoriana is still here, even bathroom fixtures are replicas of 19th-century hardware. You will have a great view of the courtyard and the famous Banyan Tree. For accommodations with a modern feel, book a room in the Diamond or Tower Wing. These rooms have stunning views of the ocean and Diamond Head.
3. Restaurants 3 restaurants and 3 lounges are on site, including: 1) Beachside Cafe - cute sun-splashed place where you can get a breakfast buffet or light lunch. Enjoy great views of Waikiki Beach! 2) Banyan Veranda - a very peaceful restaurant, famous for its Sunday Brunch and traditional High Tea Service each afternoon beneath the banyan tree. Try a variety of tea blends, accompanied by scones, finger sandwiches, sweet pastries and refreshing sorbet. There is a separate tea party for the kids, with "Alice in Wonderland" cups and plates, and child-friendly menu. 3) Ships' Tavern Restaurant and Bar - Have a delicious steak or seafood for dinner, while looking at the ocean, watching the sunset and enjoying live Hawaiian music. The menus includes Hawaiian and East-Meets-West appetizers, seafood, steak and chicken entrees, creatively-designed salads and succulent desserts. The setting is very romantic! 4) The Banyan Court - As the sun sets into the sea, enjoy the soothing sounds of a steel guitar trio, accompanied by the exotic Hawaiian hula dancers, or a beautiful solo pianist perfectly complementing the gentle surf. What can be a better background for a delicious dinner?
