1. Location

Royal Lahaina Hotel Maui has 2 towers and a few cottages spread out over 27 acres of tropical lawns and lush gardens along a half-mile stretch of Kaanapali’s best beach.

If you are looking for a picture-perfect luxury resort, Royal Lahaina Resort Maui isn’t your place. But if you are looking for an atmosphere of old Hawaii, great beach, and relaxed low-key place, this is it.

This hotel is just 3 miles north from charming Lahaina town, where you will find great shopping, dining, nightlife, entertainment and sports.

2. Rooms

Guest rooms are located in the main tower (Lahaina Kai Tower). Rooms are not lavish (this is an older hotel), but adequate, clean and comfortable, and larger than at other high-rise resorts. They have tropical-style furnishings with a hint of “Blue Hawaii” era flavor.

When you check in, ask the front desk for an odd-numbered room, so that you are on the south side. You will get better sun, view and protection from the trade winds.

After a day out and about, it will feel great to return to your room, put your feet up on the railing of your lanai, sip on a Mai Tai and listen to the surf and Hawaiian music from the lounge below.

If you can afford an ocean view room, go for it – you will have an amazing view of the beach, gorgeous in the morning and in the evening.

There are 512 rooms, 12 floors. Each room features:
  • Beds: 2 twins or 1 king
  • Central air-conditioning
  • Ceiling fan makes for cool, comfortable nights
  • Small lanai with table and 2 chairs
  • Bathroom with stand-up shower and sink
  • Color cable TV and pay-per-view movies
  • Mini-refrigerator
  • Coffee maker
  • Tea and coffee supply (fee)
  • In-room safe (fee)
  • Daily maid service
  • Room service

Cottages
Royal Lahaina Resort Maui has about 80 2-story cottages, either with garden or ocean front view. Each cottage is divided into 4 1-bedroom apartments. The bedroom opens to trade winds. Upstairs units have private lanai, and downstairs units share a patio. There are no kitchen facilities.

Royal Hale Building
We honestly tell customers not to stay at this building unless the are prepared for a budget motel experience. This 3-story building is right by the luau grounds so you will hear the noise every evening. Rooms have been recently refurbished with new carpet, paint, bedding, furniture, full a/c, mini-refrigerator. There is no elevator.

The rates for Royal Hale buildings are not published on this page, those rooms cost about $100-$110 per night, please call us at 1-800-873-0370 to check availability.

3. Restaurants

Royal Lahaina Hotel Maui has 4 restaurants and cafes on site, as well as it own luau:

   1) Royal Ocean Terrace Restaurant & Lounge
You will enjoy tropical breezes in an open-air setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Maui’s neighboring islands. They serve breakfast and dinner, as well as lavish themed buffets on select evenings. The lounge is a popular relaxing place where you can get a tropical drink along with an appetizer.

   2) Made-in-the-Shade Poolside Grill
Get a delicious freshly prepared island burger, grilled fish, kabob or fresh salad, and have a little picnic on the lush lawn right by the pool!

   3) Royal Scoop
Stop here for a tasty cone of homemade ice cream or frozen yoghurt that will cool you off. You can also get a quick fix for breakfast (muffin, fruit, etc.) or dinner (fresh deli sandwich or pizza).

   4) Basil Tomatoes Italian Grille
This is the nicest restaurant at the Royal Lahaina. It overlooks the Kaanapali North Golf Course and the Kaanapali Beach. The food is very interesting, a variety of Italian specialties with Hawaiian flair, accompanied by a selection of fine wines.

Start with a Gorgonzola Salad (started with a Gorgonzola salad -- mixed greens with Gorgonzola cheese, walnuts, and a cabernet sauvignon dressing), then try Fish Du Jour (like grilled swordfish over fetuccine alfredo with spinach and mushrooms), or Spicy Italian Sausage over linguini of your choice.

The prices are quite reasonable by Maui standards, with appetizers in the $7-$11 range and entrees mostly under $25. Add to that the front door parking, easy going breezy ambiance and attentive but unobtrusive service, and you've got a perfect dinner!

   5) Royal Lahaina Luau
This is one of the oldest luaus on Maui, and also one of the largest (500 guests capacity). It starts every evening when the sun sets along beautiful Kaanapali Beach. First, you will watch demonstrations of traditional craft work (do you know the best way to open a coconut?) and the un-earthing of the Kalua Pig from an underground oven where it has been slowly roasting all day.

Kalua Pig is the main course at the buffet, other selections include traditional foods like fresh island fish, Hawaiian sweet potatoes, poi, lomi lomi salmon, taro and guava bread, coconut cream cake, haupia (Hawaiian pudding). There is an open bar where you can get a cocktail, beer, wine, soda or punch at any time during the night.

Sit back and relax as the dynamic cast of dancers, singers, drummers and musicians present a colorful journey through the South Pacific islands of Hawaii, Tahiti and Samoa. The evening culminates with the exciting Samoan "fire knife" dance. This show is fun for all ages!

4. Things to do

  • Beach Activities
The beach in front of the Royal Lahaina Resort Maui is amazing and virtually private. It is isolated from crowds on Kaanapali by Black Rock, so you have a huge strip of sand to yourself. View of neighbor islands Molokai and Lanai make this beach truly unforgettable.

Also, it has some of the best, most accessible snorkeling on Maui.

There is a 1.5-mile-long walking path that connects Royal Lahaina Hotel Maui to other resorts. About midpoint of this trail is Whaler’s Village which has some nice upscale shops and restaurants. It is a lot of fun to walk around checking out other hotels and people watching.

  • Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch
The Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch has played host to a variety of championship events, and boasts a large professional staff. There is a 3,500-seat stadium court and 10 surrounding courts (6 of them lighted for night play). Doubles clinics, a "Stroke of the Day" program, and a "Hit with the Pro" session, and a wide range of special events are scheduled regularly.

    Other facilities include:
  • 3 pools and Jacuzzi
  • Beach Activities Center where you can rent water sports equipment, beach chairs and cabanas (open 8am-5pm)
  • Free introductory scuba lesson in the pool daily
  • Shopping arcade and beauty salon
  • Local arts and crafts fair in the lobby
  • 18-hole golf course
  • Jogging path
  • Laundromat (fee)
  • Nightly luau (fee)
  • Parking ($9/day in 2005) – spaces are pretty small
  • Babysitting (fee)
  • Wedding services (fee)
