Latest Update:
Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort closed its doors on September 6, 2007 to be transformed into million-dollar condos. No rooms will be available during construction. We recommend booking your stay at Wailea Beach Marriott Resort, a deluxe 4-star beachfront resort located in the same area.

1. Location

Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort’s location is simply terrific - 15 acres of exotic gardens sprawling gradually to the pristine Mokapu Beach that is over a mile long. Mesmerizing blue water, dark beige sand, rocky outcroppings and view of neighboring islands Lanai and Molokai are spectacular.

There is a 1.5 mile paved pathway just above the beach, great for long walks. In winter, you will see the whales breaching right in front of you. It also makes it easy to get to neighboring beaches and other hotels’ restaurants. There are many shops and restaurants in Wailea area, just minutes away from the Renaissance Maui.

The grounds have winding paths, wooden bridges, small waterfalls, lovely koi fish ponds and beautiful flowers everywhere. You will never feel crowded here.

The lobby at Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort looks beautiful - all marble and limestone, with hand-blow Italian glass wall sconces. A grand stairway in the center of the lobby has stunning view of the ocean and gardens.

2. Rooms

The main tower is a 7-story, T-shaped building located right on the beach. Inside, soft cream colors and tropical drawings set the room’s mood. The bed looks and feels very cozy with tropical bedspread, white linens and soft pillows. You will notice that even with a loveseat, chair and coffee table, there is still enough space in this large room.

The bathroom includes double vanities (one with lighted make-up mirror), Hapi coats (Japanese-style cotton robes) and Bath & Body Works toiletries. All bedspreads, drapes and towels have been recently upgraded.

Open the sliding glass door and step onto the big lanai with two padded chairs and a lounger. Here you can truly relax and enjoy the views of 10,000-ft Mt Haleakala or the ocean.

You will feel that service at the Renaissance Maui is more personal and attentive than at most hotels. That's another perk of staying at a smaller resort like this one. Most of the staff members have been there for over 10 years.

There are 345 rooms. Each room has:
  • Beds: 1 king or 2 queens
  • Air-conditioning
  • Large private lanai
  • Color cable TV and VCR
  • Sitting area
  • 3 phones
  • Small refrigerator
  • Coffee maker
  • Complimentary in-room Kona Coffee and Earl Grey tea
  • Hair dryer
  • Iron and board
  • In-room safe
  • Complimentary newspaper (Mon-Fri)
  • Daily maid service
  • Room service (6am-11pm)

Mokapu Beach Club
This is an exclusive 2-story building with 26 rooms, just steps away from a crescent-shaped beach. The rooms are very large and airy, with lots of light. You will enjoy many extras like private check-in, in-room continental breakfast, and access to private pool, oceanfront hammocks and beach cabanas.

After a day of sightseeing, it is such a pleasure to lay in the hammock and read or gaze out at the beautiful Pacific with Mt Haleakala in the background. Mokapu Beach Club also has private waiters who can bring drinks right to your cabana.

3. Restaurants

Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort has 3 restaurants, a lounge, and its own luau:

   1) Hana Gion

Gion, a famous entertainment district in Japan, has set the standard for the highest quality of Japanese food served in a relaxed setting. The tradition is carried on in Wailea. Hana Gion’s menu offers three distinct styles of dining: nabemono — tabletop cooking in a steel or ceramic pot; teppanyaki — fresh seafood and beef cooked on a stainless steel grill; and sushi — experience some of the best sushi and sashimi outside of Japan. Open 5:30 to 9 p.m.

   2) Palm Court

This restaurant is located down a beautiful winding staircase. They have a great breakfast buffet (around $20) that includes cooked-to-order omelettes, fresh fruit, sausage, bacon, smoked salmon, cereal, waffles, pastries and even miso soup. Each evening, there is a dinner buffet with different theme – seafood, Asian, etc. (around $35). Open for breakfast and dinner.

   3) Maui Onion

This is an outdoor café whose specialty is delicious hamburgers and to-die-for onion rings. Maui’s Kula onions are quite famous and are so incredibly sweet you could enjoy one raw. There is also typical patio lunch fare that is prepared better and cheaper than at Hard Rock Café. Get a cold beer and you are set! Open for lunch.

   4) Sunset Terrace Bar

An intimate retreat for cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, live entertainment and dramatic sunsets. It is located a couple of stories above the ground, so the views are really awesome.

   5) Wailea Sunset Luau

Experience the beauty of a traditional Hawaiian celebration in the oceanfront gardens that overlook spectacular tropical sunsets. The performers are young and talented, and put on quite a nice show with lots of hula and even a fire twirling dance. Food is plentiful – fresh fruit, chow mein salad, potato salad, outstanding roast pork, teriyaki steak, sesame chicken, fresh grilled fish, fried rice. There is also an ample dessert table that has delicious coconut pie and pineapple upside down cake. Full bar remains open throughout the evening. The luau seating begins at 5:30pm, 3 nights per week.

4. Things to do

  • Swimming pools
There are 2 pools at the Renaissance Maui. Both are pretty small, one is for all guests, the other one is for Mokapu Beach Club guests only. There are also 2 whirlpools. The main one is sectioned into 3 separate areas which makes it nice as far as the privacy is concerned. The other one is smaller and very private, hidden off the main walkway.

  • Beach
Mokapu is more chic than nearby beaches, with blue umbrellas and white lounge chairs sprinkled around. The sand is very pure and the tides are calm, so the entire place has a very peaceful atmosphere. The best part of all is the incredible coral reef located right off the beach. You can see sea turtles, manta rays, moray eels, and of course, plenty of fish and corals.

  • 3 championship golf courses
Wailea Golf Club is one of the largest and most acclaimed golf facilities in the islands. It includes 3 courses:

Blue Course – the first course ever built in Wailea. The fairways offer views of the ocean (where you can spot humpback whales in winter), several offshore islands, majestic peak of Mt. Haleakala, and some of Wailea's stunning residential communities. It features several fountains and lakes, and an abundance of colorful hibiscus, wiliwili trees, bougainvillea and plumeria.

The Blue was designed to appeal to a broad range of players. While it has challenged some of the finest professional players in the world, it also offers a measure of forgiveness in its wider fairways and large greens.

Emerald Course – designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., it has been rated as one of the best new courses by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest, as well as one of North America's most women-friendly by Golf for Women.

The course looks like a lush tropical playground. Everywhere you look, there are bright tropical flowers and shrubs: plumeria, bird of paradise, allamanda, gazenia, bougainvillea, beach morning glory, "firecracker" plants and more.

This course also has magnificent mountain and ocean views, and has been designed for pure golf enjoyment, regardless of your handicap.

One of the Emerald’s most picturesque spots is a large double green shared by holes #10 and #17. Fronting the green is the only lake on the course.

Gold Course – this is the most challenging course out of 3. It has been ranked among the country's best new courses by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest, and one of the world's best designed by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler.

This course is also designed by Jones Jr., who flavored the Gold with elements of classic golf course design, then finished it with a rugged, natural look. Throughout the course are stark lava rock outcroppings, indigenous Hawaiian grasses, and ancient lava rock walls built by early Hawaiians, so the setting is really spectacular.

The Gold's 200 foot elevation change from top to bottom enhances the numerous ocean and mountain vistas available from virtually every hole. The course has been labeled a "thinking player's" course because it demands strategy and careful club selection to be played well.

There is an upscale hilltop clubhouse that services all 3 courses. Its signature dining spot is SeaWatch, a stunning open-air restaurant cooled by the gentle tradewinds. Try their Miso-Chili Glazed Tiger Prawns and other seafood delicacies – they are exceptional.

As a guest of Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort, you will receive preferred rates and tee times at all 3 courses.
