1. Location

As you exit the highway, a winding 2-mile road takes you through rolling greens accentuated with fountains and palms, right to hotel entrance. Princeville Kauai has one of the most stunning settings in Hawaii. It is built into the side of a cliff to maximize the breathtaking views of Hanalei Bay and the mountains visible through nearly every window.

From the moment you enter the 18,000-sq-ft lobby, the grandeur of the resort is evident. It is full of marble, elaborate chandeliers and lavish flower arrangements. The vThe panoramic view from the lobby's floor-to-ceiling (20-25 ft) windows has to be the most dramatic vista from any hotel in Hawaii. It will absolutely take your breath away.

The check-in feature is brilliant. When you pull up to the hotel, the valet parknig attendant greets you with a fresh flower lei, hands your room key and arranges for the bags to be taken to your room. No waiting in line at all! The lobby is actually located on the 9th floor, and you take one of 7 elevators down to your room.

If you can afford to splurge for Ocean Front Prince Junior Suite, it will definitely be the hightlight of your vacation. It has the best views and a lovely living room area with dining table and large sliding glass windows that make you feel like you are floating above the ocean.

3. Restaurants

   1) Cafe Hanalei
Cafe Hanalei at Princeville Resort Hawai is possibly the world's most romantic restaurant. The beautiful reflection pool confuses your eyes, blurring sky into the crashing waves of the magnificent Pacific Ocean, and making the tables look like they are set in the middle of the ocean.

Every morning, they serve an impressive breakfast buffet. Two large center service tables are piled high with fruits, pastries, bagels, lox and all the trimmings. A hot service line includes French toast, meats, waffles, pancakes and made-to-order omelets. The buffet is decently priced at around $22-25 per person.

They also serve lunch and dinner, with special Seafood Buffet on Friday nights and Champagne Sunday Brunch. With innovative menus (how about Steamed Hawaiian Snapper with Ginger, Cilantro and Shiitake Mushrooms?) and breathtaking views of Hanalei Bay, you may never want to leave this scenic terrace.

Open from 6:30am for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

   2) La Cascata Restaurant
The restaurant takes its name, "The Cascade", from the spectacular mountain waterfalls that you see from your table. The entrance to the restaurant features dramatic iron gates, with hand-painted murals of Italian villages and ivy hanging down from the ceiling. The inviting aromas hint an evening of fnie food, gracious service and warm hospitality.

Menu features Fresh Manilla Clams, Fresh Island Ahi with Corn Cake and Charred Summer Vegetables, and Grilled Rack of Lamp on Soft Porcini Mushroom Polenta.

La Cascata's international wine list will satisfy even the most discriminating taste. After dinner, you can stay for a hand-rolled cigar and aperitif.

   Open for dinner 6pm-10pm.

   3) Living Room Lounge
This signature lounge at Princeville Kauai has towering floor-to-ceiling glass walls, many conversation areas and sofas. In spite of classic European estate decor, it makes you feel comfortable to prop your feet on the pillows or curl up just as if you were in your own home. The outdoor patios with blazing torches are favored spots for watching the sunset.

From 5:30 to 9:30pm, this lounge is also a full-fledged sushi bar. The fish is incredibly fresh, probably caught that same morning. The "Green Flash" roll, an original creation of the Living Room sushi chef, is most delicious.

Live entertainment is also amazing. The sax player and piano man fit right into this plush environment.

   4) Beach Pool & Bar
Stop here for a delicious light meal (like Portobello Mushroom Wrap or Maryland Blue Crabmeat Quesadilla) and soothing tropical libations offered throughout the day.

   5) Beachside Luau
Picturesque Hanalei Bay is the spectacular backdrop to this unique Hawaiian lua, a touch of Hawaii's past. The luau starts with conch shell sounds that invite the guests to participate in the traditional Imu ceremony (uncovering of the oven-roasted pig). You will enjoy an evening of unique Hawaiian foods topped off with a show of island music and dances.

   6) Private Dinner
Are you celebrating a special occasion? Then a romantic dinner for 2 served by the beach, on an oceanfront terrace, or in one of the hotel's best suites, will be perfect. A private waiter will set the candles, serve a chilled bottle of champagne and 4 courses that you have chosen from the special menu.

4. Things to do

  • Beach activities
The beach is very clean and always has chairs and towels available. Get a good book and relax in a hammock listening to the surf and coconut palms swaying in the breeze. Or reserve a little canvas hale for private candlelit dinner or seaside spa treatment.

A wonderful reef right off the beach is great for snorkeling and watching the beautiful fish swimming in and out.

There are some outstanding surfing and windsurfing areas around, and you can get a lesson from one of the instructors - they are excellent at their jobs.

If you are curious about trying scuba, Princeville Resort Hawaii offers introductory scuba lesson in the pool daily.

  • Pool
The pool is right by the bay and it looks like you are walking on water with nothing but the ocean and horizon behind you. Fresh pineapple and cold water are complimentary. There is a nice swim-up bar at the end of the pool.

  • Golf
Makai Golf Course has 27 holes divided into three 9-hole tracks - Ocean, Lakes and Woods. The Ocean/Lakes combo is the most popular, with Ocean the most challenging of the three. The inland Woods is a wind test and includes Zen bunker, with a boulder plopped in the middle of the huge sand pit.

Prince Course is currently ranked #51 in Top 100 US Courses Poll by Golf Digest. It may easily be the most challenging course in all of Hawaii. This is an incredibly difficult 18-hole, par-72, 7,309-yard course. Tiger Woods has yet to match par in 3 attempts at the Prince.

The course consists of 390 acres of rolling jungle, gorges and cliffs, and you can see the ocean from all 18 holes.

Prince Makai Clubhouse is as spectacular as the golf. It is very large, 60,000 sq ft, and includes a pro shop, restaurant, lounge, massage rooms, workout room, beauty salon and lap pool.

  • Tennis
Princeville Tennis Club has an incredibly beautiful location next to the Makai Golf Course. It includes 6 plexi-pave courts and a full-service Pro Shop. There are many programs and tournaments throughout the year.

  • Health Club & Spa
This spa combines the beauty and healing energy of Kauai's North Shore with Aveda line of natural skin care.

       The most popular treatments are
    - Seaweed wrap which tones, tightens and remineralizes the skin
    - Body polsh with aromatherapy wrap and exfoliation that helps to soften skin and eliminate rough areas
    - Body bronzer, a self-tanning treatment which includes relieving food and scalp massage
    - Hawaiian salt glow, a mineral salt mixed with highly concentrated Hawaiian plant extract oils, which exfoliate and nourish the skin

There is also an excercise room, one-on-one personal training, aerobic dance floor, 25-meter lap pool, outdoor whirlpool, sauna and steam room.

For the ultimate in rejuvenation, choose the Ali'i Spa Experience, which includes a 55-minute Lomi Lomi massage, a 25-min facial, and the use of all of the above facilities.
