1. Location

Paki Ke Kua has one of the most spectacular locations on Kauai's North Shore. It sits near the edge of a bluff overlooking the ocean. An expansive vista opens up right in front of you - the ocean, Hanalei Bay and Bali Hai (landmark mountain made famous by the "South Pacific" movie).

Many people prefer North Shore over the sunny and hot South Shore. It is true that North Shore gets more rain in the winter, but it is mostly short tropical rainshowers, and as a result, the area is much more lush and jungle-looking.

The charming quaint town of Hanalei is a short drive away. It has many small shops perfect for browsing, local cafes with fresh island cuisine, and a crescent-shaped beach at the famous Hanalei Bay.

A few upscale restaurants and shops are located nearby in Princeville.

2. Rooms

The vaulted ceiling in the living room and island-style furnishings give a light and airy feel to the condo. Rooms are bright and sunny. Nicely appointed, fully furnished kitchen makes it easy to dine at home (there is a grocery store nearby).

Even though there is no a/c, the condos are kept cool and comfortable by the tradewinds and gentle breezes.

The views are absolutely striking, whether your room is overlooking the lush green mountains (1- or 2-bedroom mountain view) or the sparkling Pacific Ocean (1- or 2-bedroom ocean view or ocean front). A mirrored wall in the living room makes the view visible from virtually every angle within the condo.

If you book an oceanfront condo, you will be able to see boats sailing by, playful dolphins offshore, and the giant humpback whales who come to Hawaiian waters from December until April.

If you want a closer look, step out on the lanai. It will be a perfect place to sit down with a cool tropical beverage and enjoy a colorful sunset. You will find it hard to pull yourself away!

If you have small children, the large grassy area extending beyond the lanai makes an ideally protected playground.

There are 98 condos, each features:
  • Ceiling fans (no a/c)
  • Large private lanai
  • Full kitchen
  • Color cable TV
  • Washer/dryer
  • Maid service every 4th day

3. Restaurants

Marc Pali Ke Kua has one on-site restaurant, and quite a few restaurants and cafes are located within 1-2 miles from the condo. Here are our favorite places:

   1) The Winds of Beamreach - located at Pali Ke Kua
This restaurant/cocktail lounge has charming old Hawaiian decor. It is open for dinner, fresh island seafood, steaks, and lighter fare such as locally grown organic produce, homemade salad dressings, desserts, and soups. The food is pretty good, however, many of our customers have thought it was way overpriced.

   2) Cafe Hanalei - located 1.3 miles away, at Princeville Resort
Cafe Hanalei is possibly the world's most romantic restaurant. The beautiful reflection pool confuses your eyes, blurring sky into the crashing waves of the magnificent Pacific Ocean, and making the tables look like they are set in the middle of the ocean.

Every morning, they serve an impressive breakfast buffet. Two large center service tables are piled high with fruits, pastries, bagels, lox and all the trimmings. A hot service line includes French toast, meats, waffles, pancakes and made-to-order omelets. The buffet is decently priced at around $22-25 per person.

They also serve lunch and dinner, with special Seafood Buffet on Friday nights and Champagne Sunday Brunch. With innovative menus (how about Steamed Hawaiian Snapper with Ginger, Cilantro and Shiitake Mushrooms?) and breathtaking views of Hanalei Bay, you may never want to leave this scenic terrace.

   3) Bali Hai Restaurant - located 1 mile away, at Hanalei Bay Resort
This is another one of Kauai's most romantic restaurants. The views of the ocean, setting sun, and the rugged Bali Hai peak are so gorgeous that you can hardly concentrate on the food.

The restaurant's specialty is Pacific Rim cuising made from fresh island ingredients, many of the herbs are grown in the resort's own garden.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

   4) La Cascata Restaurant - located 1.3 miles away, at Princeville Resort
The restaurant takes its name, "The Cascade", from the spectacular mountain waterfalls that you see from your table. The entrance to the restaurant features dramatic iron gates, with hand-painted murals of Italian villages and ivy hanging down from the ceiling. The inviting aromas hint an evening of fnie food, gracious service and warm hospitality.

Menu features Fresh Manilla Clams, Fresh Island Ahi with Corn Cake and Charred Summer Vegetables, and Grilled Rack of Lamp on Soft Porcini Mushroom Polenta.

La Cascata's international wine list will satisfy even the most discriminating taste. After dinner, you can stay for a hand-rolled cigar and aperitif.

   Open for dinner 6pm-10pm.

   5) Living Room Lounge - located 1.3 miles away, at Princeville Resort
This signature lounge has towering floor-to-ceiling glass walls, many conversation areas and sofas. In spite of classic European estate decor, it makes you feel comfortable to prop your feet on the pillows or curl up just as if you were in your own home. The outdoor patios with blazing torches are favored spots for watching the sunset.

From 5:30 to 9:30pm, this lounge is also a full-fledged sushi bar. The fish is incredibly fresh, probably caught that same morning. The "Green Flash" roll, an original creation of the Living Room sushi chef, is most delicious.

Live entertainment is also amazing. The sax player and piano man fit right into this plush environment.

4. Things to do

  • Beach
Jungle-looking paved path leads from the Pali Ke Kua complex to a large secluded beach below ("Hideaway Beach"). It will take you less than 5 minutes to walk down.

The beach is never crowded. You can take a long stroll, enjoying a picnic lunch, and then relax on the golden sand while looking at the Bali Hai mountain in the distance.

Surf gets kind of rough in winter, but in summer you can swim or snorkel in the blue water with tropical fish and large green sea turtles.

Another beach that we recommend is Ke'e Beach, located about 15 min from Pali Ke Kua. It is very safe for swimming and snorkeling.

  • Golf
You will receive preferred rates and tee times at both Princeville courses.

Makai Golf Course is located right next to Pali Ke Kua. It has 27 holes divided into three 9-hole tracks - Ocean, Lakes and Woods. The Ocean/Lakes combo is the most popular, with Ocean the most challenging of the three. The inland Woods is a wind test and includes Zen bunker, with a boulder plopped in the middle of the huge sand pit.

Prince Course is only 1 mile away from the condo. It is currently ranked #51 in Top 100 US Courses Poll by Golf Digest. It may easily be the most challenging course in all of Hawaii. This is an incredibly difficult 18-hole, par-72, 7,309-yard course. Tiger Woods has yet to match par in 3 attempts at the Prince.

The course consists of 390 acres of rolling jungle, gorges and cliffs, and you can see the ocean from all 18 holes.

Prince Makai Clubhouse is as spectacular as the golf. It is very large, 60,000 sq ft, and includes a pro shop, restaurant, lounge, massage rooms, workout room, beauty salon and lap pool.

    Other facilities include:
  • Swimming pool and Jacuzzi
  • Private, romantic beach gazebo
  • Picnic area with gas BBQs and tables on the beach
  • Concierge
  • Snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, surfing, windsurfing and fishing nearby
  • Close to Na Pali hiking trails
  • Free parking
