1. Location Each building at Aston Maui Lu Resort is only 2 stories high, and will remind you of a rustic lodge with tall wooden beamed ceilings. The main lobby was once the summer home of the original owner, a Canadian logger. He added more buildings and made this property into a hotel in the early 60's. Aston Maui Lu Resort is divided into 2 parts by South Kihei Road which runs parallel to the beach. The views are tropical and quaint, the entire place is very slow-paced and relaxing. Ocean view and ocean front rooms (50 rooms total) are located directly on the beach, and some have their own private coves. Garden view rooms (70 rooms total ) are located on the main property across the street from the beach. Spend a little more and get an ocean view or ocean front room – you will hear the ocean from the room and see the unbelievable sunsets right from your lanai! If you get a room on the ground floor, the sliding glass door will practically open up on the beach. The service is great, and the staff is very friendly. Aston Maui Lu Hotel is not a luxury resort, but it is strong on island hospitality.
3. Restaurants Aston Maui Lu Hotel does not have an on-site restaurant, but there are quite a few restaurants and cafes located within 1-2 miles, in Kihei town. Here are our 5 favorite places: 1) Isana Restaurant – 0.1 miles away, at 515 S Kihei Rd This is the only sushi bar in South Maui open for lunch, so now you know where to go with a noontime craving for fresh maguro or unagi. It has some of the best sushi and sashimi on Maui. Food is beautifully laid out and fresh. This restaurant also has a variety of Oriental delicacies that you can either cook at your table yakiniku-style, or leave the cooking to the chef. Isana is a fun place to socialize while eating healthy Oriental fresh vegetables, shrimp, steak and chicken. Their ocean views are spectacular! 2) Roy’s Kihei Bar & Grill – 0.9 miles away, at 303 Piikea Rd Their ever-changing menu is never boring! It’s quite an eclectic bill of fare, with specials like Plum-glazed pan-roasted Duck breast with star anise brandy cabernet, or Lemongrass-crusted Shutome with a Thai Basil peanut sauce. You’ll even find Shrimp and Pork spring rolls right next to a fancy Cassoulet or Escargot. Don’t miss Roy's great selection of wines and desserts that are to die for. The restaurant itself is spacious and upbeat. Two large glass doors at the entrance give way to an arc of tables and a bustling, display-style kichen. 3) Antonio’s – 1.1 miles away, at 1215 S Kihei Rd #F Great choice for a nice romantic dinner, with authentic Sicilian cuisine served in an intimate atmosphere. Some of all-time favorites are Osso Buco with saffon risotto, smoked salmon penne pasta with sun-dried tomatoes, peas, lemon, garlic and onion all blended in creamy vodka sauce. 4) Sansei Restaurant – 1.1 miles away, at 1881 S Kihei Rd This is a must for those looking for great Pacific Rim cuisine. Start with sushi and warm sake (the chef has many innovative and delicious kinds to try). The entrees are $18-$25, which is not bad, considering the high quality of food. Menu selections include Shichimi Seared Fresh Atlantic Salmon, topped with fresh tiger prawn, shiitake mushrooms and asparagus in a Japanese pepper sauce, or a Whole Lobster Tail stuffed with spicy crub masago and cilantro served with angel hair pasta in a spicy ginger lime chili butter. Sounds good, doesn’t it? 5) Stella Blues Café – 1.1 miles away, at 1215 S Kihei Rd #Q The owners say that they have some of the finest food on the island at the far western edge of the Grateful Dead universe. For breakfast, get some Banana Macadamia Nut Pancakes or a Tofu Scramble with fresh-squeezed orange juice. During lunch time, they offer a vast variety of soups and sandwiches, such as Stella’s Specal - grilled eggplant, roasted garlic and sweet peppers, feta cheese, cucumbers and lettuce with pesto mayo on homemade herb bread. After 5pm, dinner menu includes Thai Chili Chicken, Pacific Island Shrimp sautéed in white wine with garlic, tomatoes and mushrooms served over creamy fettucini noodles, and more. They only use quality, grain-fed, chemical-free beef. The bar includes imported and domestic beers and wine, and be sure to check out a surprising collection of Deadhead paraphernalia.
4. Things to do Start your mornings by walking through the big palm trees and fragrant flowers to the lobby for a complimentary cup of freshly brewed coffee, served daily from 5:30am to 9:00am. The pool is great and you will be inclined to spend many afternoons just lying under the palms. Aston Maui Lu Resort is a quiet restful place to get away from it all, but very close to all the excitement, too.
