1. Location

Kona Coast Resort is located in the center of Big Island's West Shore, in the Keauhou area which is known for calm winds and warm sunny days. It is adjacent to a beautiful golf course that sprawls down to the the rocky shore. You can walk to the ocean and watch the spouting lava tube, an opening in the lava rock that sends a geyser of water into the sky with every incoming wave.

The grounds at Kona Coast Resort look meticulously landscaped, with many palms, plumeria trees and tropical flowers all around. There is even a special botanical walk next to the main swimming/jacuzzi area.

Keauhou Shopping Village is across the street (but out of sight). It has a few restaurants, shops, movie theater and a supermarket. Stop by there on Friday to watch a free Hawaiian show.

Kailua-Kona town is only 4 miles north. You will find many shops, restaurants and art galleries there. It is a classic bustling beachfront town, great for a fun night out.

Kona Airport (KOA) is 12 miles away.

2. Rooms

Your condo will be very large and open, with kitchen, living and dining rooms flowing together nicely. The carpeting, furniture and counters are in shades of white and off-white - and very clean.

There are 30 buildings and 240 condos. Each condo features:
  • Ceiling fans (air-conditioning is available for extra fee)
  • Large private lanai
  • Fully equipped kitchen
  • Color cable TV
  • Washer/dryer
  • Maid service once a week

3. Restaurants

Kona Coast Resort does not have an on-site restaurant, but there are quite a few restaurants and cafes located within 1-2 miles from the condo. Here are our 4 favorite places:

   1) Sea Shell Point – on site

This poolside restaurant/bar is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Nice place to grab a quick bite to eat, or have a cocktail.

   2) Drysdale's Two Restaurant – across the street, at Keauhou Shopping Center

Local sports bar with eclectic menu. Their fish sandwiches are great! Overlooks part of the Ironman course. Great place to watch the race.

   3) The Vista Restaurant – 0.7 miles, located at the Kona Country Club

This restaurant serves a breakfast menu all day (it is considered one of the best breakfast places on the Big Island), as well as sandwich/salad lunches and steak/seafood dinners.

Make sure to come here for dinner so you can enjoy a terrific view of the sun setting over Keauhou Bay. Menu can be described as upscale at affordable prices. Start with an appetizer Sashimi and Ahi (thin sliced fish presented no a bed of cabbage with curls of daikon and carrots).

For the main course, try Island-Style Seafood Stir-Fry (Jumbo shrimp, scallops & fresh catch seared and Wok-Fried with ginger, Lemon Grass, red onion, sweet bell peppers, carrots & mushrooms in Hoison & Sesame sauce), or Island Fish Tacos with Gourmet Greens (fresh catch sautéed in chili-infused olive oil and wrapped in a Spinach tortilla with crisp lettuce, fresh salsa, Jack & Cheddar cheese).

   4) Jameson's by the Sea – 1.4 miles away

Sit outside next to the ocean or just inside the picture windows for glorious sunset views over Magic Sands Beach in Kona. The views is what has earned this restaurant quite a reputation among visitors and locals alike.

You can choose between 3 or 4 daily fish specials, some prepared Cajun-style. Sautéed scallops with lemon butter and capers and Jameson's special creamy clam chowder are popular as well. They also have great appetizers, steaks and tropical cocktails.

4. Things to do

  • Beach activities
The beach in front of the Kona Coast Resort is non-swimmable (too rocky), but Kahaluu Beach is within walking distance. It is the largest sand beach between Kailua and Keauhou. Kahuluu Beach is one of the most popular swimming and best snorkeling sites on the island - you will see many green sea turtle and dolphins. A nice picnic area is on site.

Kahuluu Beach has an interesting history. In the days of the Hawaiian kings, with many of the islands' beaches having dangerous surf and riptides, King Kamehameha wanted a safe place for his family to enjoy the ocean. He had his workers construct a seawall in the surf to protect a small cove on the sunny side of the Big Island - today, this cove today is known as Kahaluu Beach Park.
