What is the weather like on the Big Island?

Current weather in Hilo, Hawaii:
Here are the most popular questions about Big Island's weather:
"What temperature should I expect?"
The weather on the Big Island depends more on the location than the season. In general, the climate is subtropical: warm and sunny with moderate humidity throughout the year.
Water temperature in the near-shore waters ranges from the high 70's F (26 C) in summer to the low-mid 70's F (23 C) in the winter.
"How cool does it get in the mountains?"
The coolest area of the Big Island of Hawaii is the highlands of Waimea (central part of the island). In summer, daytime temperatures average 74-77 F (down to 61-64 F nighttime), in winter 72-75 F (59-62 F nighttime). If you like hiking, bring several layers of light clothing so you'll feel comfortable.
"When is the rain season?"
There is no rain season in Hawaii. In winter, northeast coast, including Volcanoes National Park and Hilo town, tends to get more rain, which makes it the most lush and green area of the island. Hilo is known as one of the flower growing capitals of the world, and also "America's wettest city."
During winter, average monthly rainfall in Hilo is 9-14 inches, during summer - 6-10 inches. Keep in mind that it usually rains early, and the clouds break off by the afternoon to re-form again in the evening, so plan your day accordingly.
"What area of the island has the best weather?"
You generally can count on getting a lot of sun in Kona area, where average monthly rainfall is less than 1" in summer and 1-3" in winter.
"Anything else?"
The Big Island of Hawaii is a place of extraordinary diversity. This island has 11 out of the world's 13 types of climate - everything from tropical rainforests to arid deserts to high alpine zones to snow-capped Mauna Kea. The climate varies as widely as the landscape, ranging from the balmy mid-70's at sea level to below-freezing temperatures at the summit of 13,796-foot Mauna Kea mountain.
