Top 5 Things to Do on the Big Island

1. Fly over an erupting volcano
2. Dive in a submarine
3. Take a snorkeling cruise
4. Take a dinner cruise
5. Go scuba diving

1. Fly over an erupting volcano

   Why this is great:
Big Island Helicopter Tour    Flying over the volcano and then following the bubbling lava flow into the ocean - it makes the island grow every day - is phenomenal. This bird's-eye view puts the enormity of it all into perspective. It is expensive, but think about it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - that lava may stop flowing tomorrow!

The tour will have many memorably moments. There's nothing quite like the aerial view of a waterfall that drops a couple thousand feet into multiple pools, or seeing giant steams of water rise when the lava enters the ocean.

2. Dive in a submarine

   Why this is great:
Submarine Dive on the Big Island    Venturing 100 feet below the sea in a high-tech submarine will makes you feel like you have stepped into a Discovery Channel program. The descent 120 feet down is surprisingly calm and comfortable.

Once you have reached the bottom of the ocean, you'll be surrounded by a 25-acre coral reef known as one of the best areas in Hawaii to view marine life. It is teeming with schools of colorful tropical fish. Look closely and you might catch glimpses of moray eels - or even a shark - in and around the reef.

   We recommend: Atlantis Submarines

3. Take a snorkeling cruise

   Why this is great:
Snorkeling Cruise    Big Island has some really pristine snorkeling spots, including Pawai Bay, a marine preseve north of Kailua where you can see thousands of brilliantly colored tropical fish, green sea turtles, wild dolphins, and gorgeous coral reef gardens.

After the boat leaves Kailu Pier, you can have a light breakfast while enjoying beautiful views of the shoreline. Once you reach the bay, the staff will hand out snorkeling gear and help you get ready. Then you can plunge off the boat's waterslide, and snorkel like crazy for the next couple of hours. Whether you are a non-swimmer or an experienced diver, you will really enjoy this cruise.

We recommend: Pawai Bay Snorkeling Cruise because it has longer snorkeling time than other cruises.

4. Take a dinner cruise

   Why this is great:
Captain Bean's Dinner Cruise    Captain Bean's Cruise is not a quiet, romantic dinner at sea. Instead, it is a raucous, rollicking extravaganza where everyone has a great time. The locals call it “The Booze Cruise” but it is really great fun and very entertaining.

As you drift away from the shore, the sunset views will take your breath away. After a grand meal and some exciting Polynesian entertainment, you'll find yourself dancing in the aisles and singing along with the music. So much for romance!

We recommend: Captain Bean's Dinner Cruise

5. Go scuba diving

Scuba Diving on the Big Island    Why this is great:
The Big Island's Kona Coast is known as one of the best diving areas in the world. The water is calm (protected by the two 13,000-ft. volcanoes), warm (75-81°F/24-27°C), and clear (visibility is more than 100 ft. year-round).

Slip into Big Island waters, and you'll find hordes of tropical fish, exotic species like mantas and eels, green sea turtles, and the occasional dolphin or whale to wonder at.

We recommend: 3 different Scuba Dives.
